Mark 4:38-40 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
The disciples saw danger all around them as the storm raged without letting up. Even though they were with Jesus, they could not separate their clear and present danger from the saving power of Christ. Prior to the storm, the disciples heard Jesus teach amazing lessons, heal a man with leprosy and heal the paralytic. So, what was Jesus going to do with the storm?
Sleep. Yes, Jesus was going to sleep, that is until His disciples woke Him in a panic fearing for their lives. The scripture says Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Oh what a mighty God we serve that the winds and waves of the ocean would obey Him; what a mighty God we serve!
How is it Jesus could find peace in the middle of chaos? Perhaps the answer rest in what Paul describes in Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The Bible provides many accounts of Jesus taking time from His busy schedule to pray. The precedence Jesus placed on prayer was essential to His ability to be at peace in all circumstances. Torrid wind and rain did not matter because Jesus was prayed up. How we respond to life and the many challenges we face as Christian is in direct relation to our prayer life. Time spend with the father equips us to approach all occasions from a spiritual mindset that transcends all understanding due to the peace of God.
My prayer is we will follow Jesus’ example of staying connected to the Father through prayer and devotion. Commit today to a lasting, bonding and imitate relationship with Christ through prayer and petition. Watch and be amazed as the peace of God will transcend all understanding and guards your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
