Where have you laid him

Raised from the deadJohn 11:32-34 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. “Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied.

Jesus met a situation that called for a miracle that only he could deliver. For Mary and Martha’s brother Lazarus was dead for several days. During this time many from the surrounding area came to comfort Mary and Martha, but when Jesus came everything changed.

Earlier Jesus met Martha who expressed her faith in Jesus by saying in John 11:22 “I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” However, Mary’s response was different for she was overcome with grief. Mary reasoned that if Jesus was there her brother would not have died. I can imagine Mary’s words were a mix of sorrow and anger for they sent for Jesus and he didn’t show up when they needed him most.

Isn’t that how we think at times? Lord I needed this yesterday! How come you didn’t answer my prayer? I’ve asked for this same thing for years! We feel this way at times when we are in need and there’s no way out. However, notice what Jesus asked Mary, “Where have you laid him?” At the moment Jesus focused on the need. Mary and Martha needed a miracle that would erase all the pain. A miracle that would raise Lazarus from the dead.

Today, what issue in your life have you laid down for dead that only Jesus can resurrect? Is it your marriage? Or perhaps it’s your finances, a wayward child or dead hopes and dreams. Whatever hopes you have abandoned, Jesus can raise them from the dead if you only believe. He isn’t asking you what the problem is, Jesus is asking you to believe by completely putting your trust in him. Trust him today, for he is faithful and will see you through.

My prayer,

Father, thank you for another day to experience your guidance, love and spirit. We give honor and glory to you and all that you are. Father, I pray that today whatever dreams, goals or hope we have buried due to the disappointments of life, I ask that you resurrect them today. Renew in us a spirit of hope and belief that will renew a broken marriage, heal the sick, revive stalled finances and bring back the prodigal child. Lord we thank you for all you do in Jesus name, amen.

  1. Thank you for sharing this passage today. It is a favourite of mine, it’s so encouraging to me how Mary and Martha seem almost to swap roles from their previous encounter with Jesus in Luke 10 – we none of us are Mary or Martha – our position and level of faith/confidence vary according to the day, the circumstances, and even how much sleep we’ve had! Although we’re called to always believe and be confident, we know that Jesus recognises sometimes we struggle and he meets us there.

  2. I can imagine experiencing all that Jesus was in the person was much like we are today! We have those that believe we can move mountains and those that doubt us! I love that this is God’s job to move mountains. I didn’t think it would take this long! Then that makes me wonder am I like the Israelites circling and grumbling? No! But I am surrounded by them! I think grace to walk and strength to sustain that walk and keeping my eyes fixed on God is sometimes the hardest because folks in my life think I’m the fixer and I resigned that years ago! Don’t know why I just shared that guess it’s on my mind today! Thank yu for this! I like that part where Jesus said father I thank you that you heard me Lazarus come forth! That’s how I pray like Jesus did! Thanking God that he hears and then I state my case! 😄😄😄hope that makes sense I’m getting ready to take on my day I. Victory! Yay! Have a super day Faithman!
