I press on

edna, don't look backAs I was sitting in my office reading over my blog and all the wonderful comments, this word came to me, Philippians 3:12-14 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

I absolutely love “The incredibles!” In fact, it is one of my favorite kiddo movies of ALL-TIME. Ok, time to curb my enthusiasm about “The Incredibles.” I especially adore super hero fashion designer Edna Mode and her larger than life persona. What I love most about Edna was her intense focus and forward thinking. Her innovative costume designs were progressive due to an evolving world that threaten societies way of life.

During one of the episodes, Mrs. Incredible paid Edna a visit in hopes she would figure out what her husband was up to. Well, the visit turned into a fashion counseling session that produced new and improved outfits for the entire family. I love Edna’s attitude when she adamantly told Mrs. Incredible that her former crime fighting outfit needed an upgrade.

Edna took on the following view, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.”  What area of your life today are you struggling to put behind you? Is it pass hurts that have cultivated bitterness within? For me it was dealing with past hurts from an abusive church culture.

I thank God for a good friend by the name of Jody who encouraged me with  “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.” God used Jody to help me see that God has placed me where I am now and to move forward with what He is doing in my life. Great advice indeed from a wise man of God.

My prayer,

Father, I just want to thank you for the victory of  “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.” Thank you for guarding our hearts and mind as we experience the adversities of this thing we call life. Thank you most of all for giving us the Grace to overcome any and every season laid out for the path set before us. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

God, you ain’t treatin me right!

moses-whyNumbers 11:10-15 Moses heard all the families standing in the doorways of their tents whining, and the LORD became extremely angry. Moses was also very aggravated. And Moses said to the LORD, “Why are you treating me, your servant, so harshly? Have mercy on me!

What did I do to deserve the burden of all these people? Did I give birth to them? Did I bring them into the world? Why did you tell me to carry them in my arms like a mother carries a nursing baby? How can I carry them to the land you swore to give their ancestors? Where am I supposed to get meat for all these people?

They keep whining to me, saying, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ I can’t carry all these people by myself! The load is far too heavy! If this is how you intend to treat me, just go ahead and kill me. Do me a favor and spare me this misery!”

How can you not love the relationship Moses had with God! It was raw with emotions and a keeping it real type vibe. Moses was honest with God yet reverent. Earlier the Israelites were at the entrance of their tent wailing, for they did not want to eat Manna any longer.

What do you do when the Lord has laid the responsibility of 2 million plus people on your shoulders who have experienced oppression for 400 years? What do you do when all eyes are on you to provide? What do you do when you are the middle man to the creator of the universe? You cry out with brutal honesty to the one who is able to save.

Often times we feel the weight of the world upon our shoulders in various ways. Sometimes we feel our good deeds are not honored or acknowledged. Or perhaps we feel this way, “Lord, I live a clean life, I don’t do the things I see other folks do who could care less about serving you. Yet, why am I not feeling blessed? Why am I not seeing the fruits of my labor like Jimmy down the street who does not serve you? Why Lord?”

Or take the Prophet Elijah for example, in 1 Kings 19:1-18 Jezebel said she was going to kill Elijah because he killed all the idol prophets with a sword. Scriptures says Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. He spoke to God saying, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”

Frustrated and disgusted is how Moses and Elijah felt. However, what I want you to get from this lesson is what Moses and Elijah did when faced with overwhelming circumstances. They took their burdens to God the one who could change the outcome. They were open and honest with their feelings. As a result, God lovingly provided the solution for His people.

God cares for you and will never leave or forsake you. Sometimes the silence is deafening, but nothing more than a parent standing in the background allowing adversity which becomes the pathway to wisdom. During adversity, run to God with honesty, reverence, and an ear to hear. He will provide the solution as well as the Grace to sustain you.

My prayer,

Father, thank you for the lessons of life. We thank you that you are a God who wants us to be open and honest with our feelings. There is no one like you. Help us to fix our eyes on you when life doesn’t seem fair or we feel your loving arms have let us go.

Father, you said you would never leave or forsake us, and your word is true today as is was yesterday. Teach us to rely on you. Groom us to be like you. Lead us to walk like you. Finally, give us the Grace to love like you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
