If I could just touch the hem of his garment

Woman touching Jesus hem bMatthew 9:20-22  And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

What do you do when all reasonable options for victory in your life have failed? I mean, the bible says the woman with the issue of blood was sick for twelve long years. She grappled within the confinements of limited options, for the scripture say that she tried everything but to no avail was she relieved.

We’ve heard the expression “desperate times call for desperate measures.” This woman was desperate for an end to her long-suffering. She knew in her heart of hearts that Jesus was the answer to all her problems. She saw the obstacles before her, the crowd that surrounded Jesus for in Matthew 9:18-19 the bible speaks of a ruler who came to Jesus asking if he could revive his dead daughter.

All the while the woman with the issue of blood kept saying to her self, “if I could just touch the hem of his garment, everything will be alright.” She was reaching out to the one hope that would make her whole again. The one hope that would inspire her to live again. The one hope that would heal her broken dreams. The one hope that is Jesus whom every knee shall bow and every tongue must confess that he is Lord of Lords and King of Kings!

Oh, I wish I had more time to unpack this lesson the way I would like to. Allow me to encourage you today by saying there is hope in your desperate situation. Whatever you’re going through, reach out like this woman and touch the hem of his garment to receive healing. Reach out with a little faith for all it takes is a mustard seed of faith (Luke 17:6).

If your marriage is in trouble, reach out and touch the hem of his garment. If your finances are tore up from the floor up, reach out and touch the hem of his garment. If your child is out of control, reach out and touch the hem of his garment.  If you feel life isn’t worth living, reach out and touch the hem of his garment. Whatever the need is, Jesus is the answer.

My prayer,

Father, we realize that you are all-powerful, all-knowing and full of compassion. I’m asking that you touch someone who is hurting today. I’m asking that your healing power release all pain and suffering as they read these words today. Give them a renewed spirit and a heart of flesh. Restore that which was lost. Finally Father, may your love and grace overflow in their lives forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.

  1. Please pray for my daughter Alex! We have had yet another medical diagnoses! She told me yesterday she was not believing in God anymore because she prayed even before we got the report! She cried and said mom I’ve always put my faith in God so why am I always sick and why mom didn’t he answer? I didn’t say a word but cried with her! I’m still absorbing it all. She’s been chronically ill since the age of 2. She is 21. I believe in miracles my faith never ever wavers, never goes away, never doubts! I’m fine it’s my girl that needs prayer! If you have a prayer list will you please add her to it? I’ve got my prayer warriors and I thought of you last night and then again today and here I am! I will not be moved from my position with God. I got this one but my girl, makes me cry as I type this I pray something I don’t even know what to pray! Maybe you do! Thank you in advance!

    • Romans 8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

Michelle I thought long and hard on this and asked God for wisdom for at times we do not have all the answers and I for one do not profess to have them all. However, what we do have is a promise from God that he will never leave or forsake us. Furthermore, there are no small prints to take away the bold promises of God. It’s hard seeing our babies in pain wondering has God forgotten them or why doesn’t He answer their prayer when they are hurting.

I am moved by the way you handled the entire moment by offering a shoulder to cry on for Alex. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is to remain silence while our actions speak volumes. I believe in that moment God gave you the wisdom to console with tears, empathy and a mother’s love that only you can provide.

I am praying for you and Alex with all my heart. Romans 8:26 says it all when we cannot piece the words together to pray to our Father. This in and of itself lets us know that God is with us. Remain strong for Alex as you have been for all these years for it is obvious she has a foundation of Christ. God is giving you the strength to be the faith she needs to keep moving forward even though she may be stumbling a bit. And by the way, we all stumble at times, even the best of us.

Love your friend and brother in Christ,

      • Thank you so much for this! I saved this verse to my phone so I can read it. I always have a verse I’m standing on. Geez I’ve been standing on the verse [woman great is thy faith, be it unto thee even as thou wilt and her daughter was made whole from that very hour] since she was 3. Wow! That’s along time to believe and stand! I’ll still be standing on it forever because I’ve realize whole is subjective to our thoughts and perceptions so, WHOLE seems to grow and evolve as she grows, it seems.
Many people have tried in my life to deter me from my faith. One person even blamed me when God didn’t answer like they expected. I just shut up and believe. Between you and me I don’t really care what others think about God really. He’s like my best friend. He keeps my girl alive and who wouldn’t love a God like that?
I see and read all kinds of things but I overlook it because really I think most people just talk but this is something I know about every single person….we all have to be alone with God. You can’t run from him. I know this….and it is at those times when we are alone with God, you can’t deny those moments when you know something bigger then you is around, chasing you down, bringing sunrises and sunsets to wow you. Growing flowers in the concrete, making rainbows when there is no rain, BIG things. God is always trying to get our attention but it’s during those alone time that he covers us and waits for us to ask for help. I love it God acts all big like he really is. A lot of people try to pass off miracles and say it was this or that but I know it was God. I know for a fact that God places people in my life and vice versa to splash some Jesus on them. I only share with folks he brings across my path. I would never make a good preacher I’m a one on one kind of God person! Maybe that’s because I’ve got my hands full with Alex. So God’s just going to have to use me to touch the few that I do and that’s ok with me. Thank you for your prayers. I’m glad you are here! You never know who you will touch in your life! I bet we’ll get to heaven and meet people that read something we shared and maybe it did something for them, or God used it. I don’t know.
I will say what my Pa used to say, “I can’t tell you what to do but I sure can tell you what NOT to do.” That list was long! 😀 Be blessed and have a super weekend and thank you for this! I appreciate you! MichelleMarie
