Matthew 4:1-4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
As I was driving, this message came to me, “It is written.” I thought about the example Jesus set with regards to battling the lies and attacks of Satan. I also thought about James 4:7 “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.“ Obviously God was taking me somewhere in my thoughts or perhaps He was preparing me for something around the corner.
Sure enough, God was preparing me for something around the corner that unfolded within a matter of hours. My wife texted me about an incident at school and shortly there after I received a call stating there were unpaid charges to Best Buy and I needed to settle them over the phone.
First things first, we do not own a Best Buy account (this was a fraudulent call) and secondly, the school incident was settled peacefully. The Bible is correct in saying in 2 Corinthians 2:11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes. Over the years I have noticed the pattern in which Satan attacks my family. His preferred method or avenue of attack comes either through our children or our finances.
Nothing new, just the same old tricks, lies and schemes designed to take our eyes off Jesus. What I realized through the entire ordeal is spiritual warfare is serious. If you come to the fight in the flesh, you will be eaten alive…period! I simply took a moment to go into my closet were I have scriptures on my door and I began to pray each scripture by saying, “It is written” for these are the promises of God Almighty by which I stand. No weapon formed against me shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17)!
Paul says in Ephesians 6:10-12 “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” We must be strong in the Lord by embracing His grace that enables us to powerfully live out His words….period.
I love how James 4:7 states, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.“ In Matthew 4:1-4, Jesus masterfully resisted Satan by quoting scriptures that refuted the lies of Satan. We are to stand strong in our faith against the devil’s lies and schemes. And when we are not able to stand, our great high priest by the name of Jesus will stand for us.
When Satan says to you that you are worthless, God’s grace says, “It is written in Genesis 1:27 God created humankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them, male and female he created them.” When Satan says “you messed up,” God’s grace says, “It is written in Romans 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” When Satan says you can’t pray to God…he isn’t listening to you! God’s grace says, “It is written in Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” I could go on and on about the bold promises of God, but I’m sure you get the picture I am trying to paint.
Father, we are so grateful that your son died on the cross so we may have life and life to the full. We thank you for loving us in spite of who we are. Your grace and mercy sees us as the righteousness of Christ. I pray that our hearts are filled with joy and your words which gives us the power to resist the devil. Help us to follow the example Jesus set by resisting Satan with scripture. Yes, it is written has POWER! Lord, let us powerfully walk in that power today and forever more, in Jesus’ name we pray, amen!
