Come as you are

Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

1 Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Just sitting thinking about the times I have attended church and the preacher asked it anyone needed prayer to come forward. Sadly, those that stepped forward only numbered a few. I wondered why more people did not come forward for prayer. After all, don’t we all need prayer?

After much thought, I finally figured out why so few step forward for prayer. FEAR is the common denominator. Fear of what others may think. Fear of being vulnerable to a possible stranger. Fear of the unknown, whatever that may be.

Many believe you only come up for prayer if something is wrong in your life. Something overwhelming with a touch of the impossible. This perception is understood, but does not speak truth in its reality.

I believe Satan who is the father of lies (John 8:44) has lied to God’s people by creating the perception that you only ask for prayer if something is wrong. I’ve heard and listened to the voices myself like, “Don’t go up there, all those people will talk about you; if you go up there they will think something is wrong with you.” The list goes on and on.

I have come to believe that prayer is for more than life issues or challenges; prayer is to encourage, to bless, to uplift, and to heal. Scriptures like Matthew 11:28-30 and 1 Thessalonians 5:11 teach us the value of coming to Jesus as you are and to encourage one another.

Seeking prayer must be viewed from a place of power and humility instead of one of weakness. Think about it for a second; it takes courage to talk about anything that has brought you to a cross-road. Seeking intercession is humility for you are saying I have done all I know how to do, please help me.

Now, we must strengthen that position further by changing the mindset and culture of requesting prayer as being only for issues. Aggressively receive the notion that just maybe prayer is useful for encouraging and blessing your life as well as the lives of your immediate/distance family.

My prayer is this post will free those held in bondage by fear to fear no more! Our God is so much bigger than the boundaries of our world. Expand your horizons by coming to the throne of grace just as you are for the master is able to intercede on your behalf. Trust Him today and forever more, amen!
