Can we talk Wednesday?

QUESTION: Is grace a license to sin?

SCRIPTURE REFERENCE: Romans 6:1-5 (NLT) Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives. Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was.

MY ANSWER: By NO means is grace a license to sin. In fact, once we as believers understand what Jesus dying on the cross has eternally established for all who call on His name, our mindset shifts from condemnation to gratitude. This is not to say we will not sin again. However, our response to sin will be one of “Father I realized that I fell short today, but I thank you that I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. Thus, I have been redeemed and there is no condemnation. I thank you that you have already given me everything to overcome. Now I praise you for the victory!” As opposed to saying “Oh God I have sinned, please forgive me!”

When we realize that we are loved and cared for by a loving Father who see us as righteous, our identity takes on power that is in the finished works of Jesus Christ by way of the cross. The power of grace produces a heart of gratitude and the power of the Holy Spirit to say no to sin and yes to Christ as we realize our true identity in Christ. That is my two cents and I am sticking to it. Let’s hear what you have to say on this segment of “Can we talk Wednesday.”

  1. I agree with your assessment. Grace and God’s Mercy is Not a Free pass to willfully sin. Kinda reminds me of one of my co-workers who says his wife is married but he’s not!! I’ll let that sink in………..

However as we all know double standards exist and people use religion as an excuse to do things that they know are wrong, illegal or immoral. How many times have we heard some entertainer, sports figure, right-wing politician or even some defrocked ministers say I’ve Found Jesus! Usually after committing and/or abetting some heinous crimes. Well Jesus is never lost but those folks were and still probably are. Often Jesus/Christianity are used as a convenience. A sad commentary on American Christians.
