If I could just touch the hem of his garment

Matthew 9:20-22  And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

What do you do when all reasonable options for victory in your life have failed? I mean, the bible says the woman with the issue of blood was sick for twelve long years. She grappled within the confinements of limited options, for the scripture say that she tried everything but to no avail was she relieved.

We’ve heard the expression “desperate times call for desperate measures.” This woman was desperate for an end to her long-suffering. She knew in her heart of hearts that Jesus was the answer to all her problems. She saw the obstacles before her, the crowd that surrounded Jesus for in Matthew 9:18-19 the bible speaks of a ruler who came to Jesus asking if he could revive his dead daughter.

All the while the woman with the issue of blood kept saying to her self, “if I could just touch the hem of his garment, everything will be alright.” She was reaching out to the one hope that would make her whole again. The one hope that would inspire her to live again. The one hope that would heal her broken dreams. The one hope that is Jesus whom every knee shall bow and every tongue must confess that he is Lord of Lords and King of Kings!

Oh, I wish I had more time to unpack this lesson the way I would like to. Allow me to encourage you today by saying there is hope in your desperate situation. Whatever you’re going through, reach out like this woman and touch the hem of his garment to receive healing. Reach out with a little faith for all it takes is a mustard seed of faith (Luke 17:6).

If your marriage is in trouble, reach out and touch the hem of his garment. If your finances are tore up from the floor up, reach out and touch the hem of his garment. If your child is out of control, reach out and touch the hem of his garment.  If you feel life isn’t worth living, reach out and touch the hem of his garment. Whatever the need is, Jesus is the answer.

My prayer,

Father, we realize that you are all-powerful, all-knowing and full of compassion. I’m asking that you touch someone who is hurting today. I’m asking that your healing power release all pain and suffering as they read these words today. Give them a renewed spirit and a heart of flesh. Restore that which was lost. Finally Father, may your love and grace overflow in their lives forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.

  1. I can relate to this Bible story. I have suffered with a chronic illness for several years. Been hospitalized repeatedly. Nov. 7th I will be going to a gastric doctor and later that same day I will be at the VA Hospital. For me my suffering has become the New Normal. I’ve had to cancel opportunities to go outside because I must stay in my bed due to chronic pain. The way I see it if healing does not come in this Life then my reward, an end to pain, arthritis and digestive problems will come in the next Life. I Look forward to entering Heaven because then I will have no more problems.

  2. That’s true. When sickness, illness and liabilities come that’s when you find out who your true friends are. Sadly as time has passed and I’ve had to drop out of certain activities and organizations those folks who said they were my friends and claimed the Liked if not Loved me have stop being my friends. To them I’m a failure. However I’m the same person inside that I was when I was 18 years old. I have the same hopes, dreams, goals and desires its just that now my body has weakened and in some cases no longer obeys my commands. Sometimes I wonder what these same people would say to Evangelist and Christian Speaker Joni Earaekson Tada who has been a quadriplegic since a diving accident when she was a teenager.

What Rev. Pastor Lionel Sneed says is true. His words give me hope for tomorrow.
