Thought for the day

Isaiah 54:13-15 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

13 And all your [spiritual] children shall be disciples [taught by the Lord and obedient to His will], and great shall be the peace and undisturbed composure of your children.

14 You shall establish yourself in righteousness (rightness, in conformity with God’s will and order): you shall be far from even the thought of oppression or destruction, for you shall not fear, and from terror, for it shall not come near you.

15 Behold, they may gather together and stir up strife, but it is not from Me. Whoever stirs up strife against you shall fall and surrender to you.

Train them up

praying familyProverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.”

The other night as I was getting our boys ready for bed, we discussed how much we love each other. And yes you say and hear “I love you to infinity and beyond” and “I love you this much” (with arms stretched out wide). Such wonderful declarations of affection for one another.

However, I have learned to give my children something more when I tell them how much I love them. Now I tell them that their mother and I love them so much that we have taught them about Jesus. No greater love can a parent pass on to their children than to teach them about Jesus and just how much He loves them.

Every night before our kids go to bed (we have done this for years), our kids say the following affirmations:

  • I am smart
  • I am handsome
  • I am happy
  • I am a good boy
  • I am calm
  • Jesus loves me

To understand the significance of this you must first know that our 8 and 12 year boys have special needs. Both have been diagnosed with ADHD. Our 8-year-old was diagnosed with a Mood Disorder while our 12-year-old was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome.

So, you see it is important that they know without a shadow of a doubt who they are in Christ and that Jesus loves them deeply. Whenever the world attempts to label them, they know their true identity in Christ with complete faith in Christ alone.

This thing we call life is full of twist and turns that create distractions. However, I want to encourage every parent within the sound of my typing to take time to show your children Jesus. This will forever be the greatest act of love a parent could ever give to their children.

Train them up in God’s words and ways for they shall not depart from it. Pray often with your children. Spend quality fun time with them so they see the silly side of you as well. Do not be afraid to make mistakes. When you make a mistake, be quick to apologize (this is so powerful). I will say that again, when you make a mistake, be quick to apologize.

Trust that the Lord blessed you with children because He not only cares for you, but know that He trust you and has given you the grace to successfully raise your children. So, I say again parents, continue to “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.”

To God be the glory, amen!
