Can we talk Wednesday?

QUESTION: Is grace a license to sin?

SCRIPTURE REFERENCE: Romans 6:1-5 (NLT) Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives. Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was.

MY ANSWER: By NO means is grace a license to sin. In fact, once we as believers understand what Jesus dying on the cross has eternally established for all who call on His name, our mindset shifts from condemnation to gratitude. This is not to say we will not sin again. However, our response to sin will be one of “Father I realized that I fell short today, but I thank you that I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. Thus, I have been redeemed and there is no condemnation. I thank you that you have already given me everything to overcome. Now I praise you for the victory!” As opposed to saying “Oh God I have sinned, please forgive me!”

When we realize that we are loved and cared for by a loving Father who see us as righteous, our identity takes on power that is in the finished works of Jesus Christ by way of the cross. The power of grace produces a heart of gratitude and the power of the Holy Spirit to say no to sin and yes to Christ as we realize our true identity in Christ. That is my two cents and I am sticking to it. Let’s hear what you have to say on this segment of “Can we talk Wednesday.”

Jesus sat down

3 chairsHebrews 10:9-14 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

The act of sitting down is a posture of rest, peace and of being still. However, Hebrews 10:12 speaks of a rest and posture that only Jesus could obtain. A sitting down that has established eternal, perfect and complete rest. A rest that has brought God’s children to complete holiness unto Himself.

Hebrews 10:9-14 speaks of the ultimate and perfect sacrifice of Jesus which was for the forgiveness and atonement of all sins. However, the old testament act of sacrificing a perfect animal to atone (Leviticus 17:11, 16:20-22, 16:15) for our sins was imperfect; for the act was performed over and over for the atonement of sin. Thus, there could never be complete rest and forgiveness of sin. It’s like a sore that never heals. You have to keep changing the bandage to treat the sore.

Because of what Jesus did on the cross, you and I have been made the righteousness of God through Christ Jesus for eternity (2 Corinthians 5:21)! Thus, when God looks at us, He does not see sin according to Old Testament terms; He sees His good and perfect son Jesus Christ.

Jesus sat down so we could stand up in complete confidence to our true identity in Christ (Galatians 3:26). No longer are we to hang our heads in shame for pass, present or future mistakes. We are declared righteous because of Jesus and Jesus alone…period!
